LBC: Your First Lolita Item.

Lolita Blog Carnival can be found here!

I love these themes, they're not written too exactly or explained in any way so it's up to the writer to interpret them any way they see fit to. For example this time I thought long and hard about the definition of "first lolita item". What would count as one? The first item I owned that was meant for lolita? The first item that actually was acceptably lolita? The first brand piece? Well, let's see. Prepare your frilly butts though, the ita is strong in this one!

The first item I ever owned that I meant for lolita

...was of course a shoddily handmade headdress. I started dressing up in the mid-2000's, what were you expecting? I can't remember how often I wore this thing but since even once would be too many it may be for the best.

The first item that actually counts as lolita

Lul, you can has a mini photoshoot. This is the first actual lolita outfit that I ever owned and true to form it was selfmade. Btw gimme some cred that stone ramp was icy and I almost broke my ankleneck 50000000 times.

Yup, it's an obvious lolita outfit! Shame that it doesn't show but the fabric was pinstripe and it was no small pride of mine that I managed to make the stripes match all around the skirt. :D

In fact it's not too bad if you ignore the lack of hairdo, weird ribbon dangly, maxipad headdress and them strap-things (personally I still kind of like the strap-things though)!

My first brand item

It was Moi-Meme-Moitie! It's a bath towel! I still have it! :D

Aaaanyway the story goes that a group of friends saw those towels and made a group order, to which I jumped mostly out of the hilarity of the whole thing. Lolita bath towel, well why the hell not I'm totes in on this! I still have it here, it's quite a good towel.

My first serious brand item

Nope, not the dress. Dress is still selfmade. It's the shirt, Jane Marple, and unusual in its time in that it had both a huge Peter Pan -collar and no lace or ruffle what so ever. In short it was a dream shirt for me that matched everything in my closet and never looked out of place.

Idk if it's easier to see in this photo but maybe I'll get extra points for matching my ice creams to my outfit. Anygays I wore this shirt almost literally to shreds. I still have it but in the end I dyed it chocolate brown, years of use always shows on the armpits of a white shirt no matter how well and often you wash it. :(

My first dream item

I'm sure this one's unnecessary but I wanted to end this post with something else than a mental image of yellowed armpits. Puppet Circus was my dream print for ages, even after realizing I'd never be small enough or rich enough to get the OP. But seriously, there's just something about gold etched velvet, and not only that but the print on PC does own my heart.

I became the happy owner of this skirt via a friend who knew I loved the skirt a little more than my kidneys and, since she was planning to sell it, offered it first to me. I've let out some serious happy sounds around that time of my life!

Historical Inspired Coordinates

Time for the Lolita Blog Carnival again! Today's theme is Historical Inspired Coords and as you can maybe guess it's a theme that's very close to my heart. I decided to go for Biedermeier, an era that's perhaps not one of the most elegant but definitely ranks high in the amount of poof, frills, lace, showy bonnets and even showier plaited hairstyles!

First of all, some more precise examples of the style I'm going for:

***

Here's my take on it, lolified.

Front (btw those suspicious looking things on the wall were used on Icelandic horses, not humans :D) -

and back. I love this hoodie, can't believe it's been such a long time since I last wore it!

And of course I had to go outside as well. Yes, we have fresh snow as opposed to yesterday when it mostly rained, or the day before that was sunny.

Rundown
Overdress: selfmade
Underdress: R-series
Bonnet: Mrs Parker's Millinery & Mercantile
Shirt + shoes + gloves: vintage
All else: offbrand

Haha, this actually reminds me of that time when I did a loli coordinate based on the fashions of 1900-2000. :D Here they are:

All the Breiðholt banners.

Inspired by a comment I figured it would be a good time to look back at the short-ish history of Breiðholt the Blog by that Random Finnish Immigrant and see just how many headers I've gone through so far. I found both more and less than I though - more than I remembered having, but less in the sense that I seem to remember some that I could not find. Most likely they have a file name that's not related to them being a header and therefore lost somewhere in the depths of my laptop - but I digress. Here are the ones I did find, possibly in order of appearance (although I'm not making any promises).

The first Breiðholt banner ever to appear was this one. It was short-lived because it looked so messy and unorganized, as in "would I myself want to read a blog with a header like this? HELL NAH" -kind of way. Somehow seeing it now makes me feel really nostalgic though, all those feelings of having a brand new blog and not quite knowing which direction I should take it.

(In the end I chose photospammy + nonsense, in my opinion this was a wise choice.)

The second one that was around for a good deal longer. Definitely an improvement in terms of design and tidiness but still somehow really impersonal. Eventually it began to feel like just the top decoration instead of the first invitation on browsing more of the blog that it should be, so I kept the raven theme and changed it to -

this one. This is the first Bholt banner that featured my own mug (from an interesting photoshoot we did somewhere I did not know where, only I knew there were lava fields and it was a short drive away)(Hafnarfjörður?). In the background picture you can see Kronkku and Raakku, two Breiðholt ravens that I keep seeing here every year. Kronkku is very easy to tell because he's HUGE. Tall and fat, and he sings in a slow KRONK... KRONK... KRONK... voice.

Kronkku once tried to steal our bin bag that I had left outside for one effing minute while I turned back to get something else. By the time I returned he had successfully dragged the bag across our front yard already.

Hmmm, come to think of it I haven't seen them yet this year. It's about time they make their appearance!

The thing that usually prompts me to change the banner is a seasonal change. It would feel weird to have a summer-y banner in the autumn/winter and vice versa. I stuck with this one for a long time too, though.

Continuing on the theme - I just realized it would be easy to time these based on the photos I've used in them, although sometimes I do use older material too. I could still say though that this banner cannot be younger than year XYZÖ because that's when I bought that Lady Sloth JSK and the Mrs Parker's Millinery & Mercantile bonnet.

Mwahahaha I remember when I took this photo! I was wearing a corset, extra amount of petticoats (I wear any number of petticoats between one and four depending on the outfit and how much support it needs - they're all quite thin though and in my own coords I prefer A-line to cupcake any time) and tall heels and taking photos on carpeted floor. In short, I could not bend my back or see my feet and took a majestic fall right as the self timer went off. :D

Not upside-down of course. Some things will always be GIMP shoppery. Many things, in fact.

Another banner that I felt I had had for forever, but I can see why. It's quite a good one - simple, all the info's there and an inoffensive colour combo. I have no idea who the Alf in that photo is, I found the pic glued to a lamp post and took a photo of it.

All of a sudden I realized that it was already early summer and did I really want to have a winter coat in the banner - NO.

THIS is what I wanted for a summer. A summer that, in essence, turned out to be only two days of sunshine or something of the sort. Old Icelandic grandmas are saying the last summer that we had, boy, that was one bad weather summer and no mistake, the news sites state it was the worst in... 17 years if memory serves. Anyway, awful, awful summer. Wish I had been in Finland instead.

At least I could get that summer feeling for the banner, so I chose one yukata photo that looked suitable and ran with it.

And so we have come to the current one. Again prompted by the changing season because I also don't want to have a yukata banner for cold seasons. By cold I mean seasons that are and should be cold, not summers that just are cold to annoy you. D:( We'll see how long this one lasts - could be autumn, could be until spring, could be until summer - could be until December. No promises, even when I decide on a schedule such as "change the banner once a season" I can never hold onto them. :3

Meme, parts 7, 8 and 9.

I'm going to skip the questions number 5. and 6. because I cannot be bothered to go take loads of photos and besides wardrobe posts don't personally interest me very much - I'm more eager to see what people are wearing than what they could potentially be wearing. As for my favourite lolita brand, it's Mary Magdalene and the fact that it's my favourite is already old news.

7. Why I wear Lolita?

I remember an interview I partook in years, years ago where one of the girls interviewed (LJ nick icecreambat) said in one sentence everything I had felt about wearing lolita but had not been able to put into words myself, and that sentence has stuck with me ever since. Wearing lolita is all about wanting to look feminine without having to look sexy.

You see, before I began to wear this style the only option for a feminine look included showing a lot of skin, or at the very least a lot of curve. I did not feel at home with the fashions of the day and my former ragged hippie-look was probably just a response to a) not wanting to wear the current trend (at one point this current trend was wearing a G-string with low cut trousers so that you could see the panties all the way to your bum crack!) and b) being a goldsmith student: this means that whatever I wore it would sooner or later be torn, burned, acid burned or otherwise stained beyond belief so anything and everything nice was banned from my "wardrobe".

Lolita vs. Icelandic weather, 0-6.

8.  Why don't I wear Lolita more often?

Because it takes hell of a lot of time to put together! My hair, like mentioned in the previous entry, takes a long time to style and I don't like to wear wigs. Make-up, even though you cannot even tell I'm wearing any, can also take an hour to put on. Selecting the clothes and accessorizing can be a serious hurdle on a bad day. All in all I take minimum one full hour and typically two before I'm ready - and then I take one step outside the house and the Icelandic weather tears my hair out of its do and throws a rain cloud on my face.

Lolita, for me, is a luxurious style worn just for the hell of it, to enjoy wearing something unusual and lovely.

9.  5 keywords that describe my personal Lolita style

Hmmmm. 1. Classic, 2. Toned-down, 3. Self-made, 4. Lol Ita, 5. Wind-blown.

Annnd we're done (beware your eyes)!

Ok I couldn't wait until tomorrow for that 2000's inspired lolita. Remember when sometime earlier I may have mentioned (can't remember if I did) that I'm still striving for lolita outfits despite the theme? OK, forget about that right now. I was just saving all my ita blast for the final attack! :D
2000's was the true era of the emogoff, right?

And hey, it's not so far from truth - behold my very first lolita outfit from some time around 2004. Definitely felt like coming full circle, in a way. Besides, when looking at lolita styles I'd say ita is easily the most common one of the 2000's and I don't miss my youth - ANYWAYS -

Alas the camera battery died just as I was starting to cut myself with the petals. You'll just have to imagine it.

Anyways, time travel done! A huge big thank you to all of you who followed through

All offbrand because who in their right minds wears burando for a decidedly ita coord (a genius of course but I'm not one of those people)? Oh wait I made that choker myself, cutting out that broken heart shape, drilling holes, enameling it blue etc. in other words the broken heart bleeding pearls piece is, alas, completely made by Yours Truly. I have no excuses.
I also have no shoes, whoops.
